ArcelorMittal and the Paris 2024 Olympic relay
The Olympic relay is a modern tradition inspired by ancient Greek practices. First introduced at the 1936 Amsterdam Olympics, it has become an iconic feature of every Olympic Games. In total 10,000 torchbearers will accompany the Torch - walking, running, cycling and skateboarding - as it travels across roads and mountains, on an epic journey through France and its territories to Paris, where it will ceremoniously light the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony of this year's Olympics.
Responsible for manufacturing the Torch - using our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, low-carbon emissions steel - ArcelorMittal will have over 75 representatives from teams across the world participating in the relay.
Recognising the contributions our torchbearers have made to safety at ArcelorMittal
In recognition of the importance of health and safety at ArcelorMittal, many of our torchbearers were selected to join the Paris 2024 Olympic Relay because of their significant contributions to safety. They come from all levels - senior management to shop floor - and represent countries where our primary steelmaking and mining operations are located.
Each torchbearer has been nominated by their manager and peers for their invaluable contributions to their teams and the company. These include the organisation of dedicated events to support a safer workplace, developing initiatives that promote employee safety and wellbeing and improving processes, materials and training that promote leadership, knowledge sharing and continued education.
